About the Contest

The Silverlight Control Builder Contest is all about contributing to the Silverlight Community. We hope this contest will serve as a catalyst for an expanding Silverlight control developer community.

The goal of this contest is for contestants to build innovative and useful controls using the Silverlight platform. Source code for each of the entries will be made available after the contest.

Contestant Requirements

The Silverlight Control Builder Contest is only open to individuals who are 18 years of age or older.

All contestants must be able to provide a valid mailing address. Unclaimed, undeliverable, or returned prizes will be forfeited.

Contestants agree that event organizers reserve the right to disqualify any contestant for any reason.

All contestants must agree to be bound by the official contest rules and the decision of the judges.

Each contestant may submit one entry. Contestant submitted entries subsequent to the first entry will not be evaluated.

Entry Requirements

Controls must be designed to work with Silverlight 2 or later. Silverlight 1 Entries will not be accepted or evaluated.

All entries must be received between now and 12:00 AM ET, 9/19/2009 12:00:00 AM. Entries received after this date will not be accepted or evaluated. The deadline may change at any time for any reason.

Contestants must provide the control source code as part of the submission. The source code should be provided as a ZIP archive and should include the following items:

  • A single Visual Studio 2008 Solution containing each of the solution projects.
  • A Silverlight Application project that contains the custom control.
  • A Test Silverlight Web Project that will host the Silverlight control. The host web project must demonstrate the control in use.
  • The code must compile. If the code does not compile, the entry will not be evaluated.

The host web project should contain a page that demonstrates the control in use.

Control must be original work from the contestant, it is acceptable to inherit from the base control functionality provided by Silverlight, but it must add some value.

The use of Third-Party components in entries is expressly prohibited.

Control Source Code must be available under an open source license as defined by the Open Source Initiative. We recommend the Microsoft Public License (Ms-PL) as it is a very simple and permissive license.

Entries must not be commercial or shareware.

Contest Availability

The event organizers reserve the right to cancel the contest at any time for any reason.

The contest will be cancelled if fewer than 3 entries are submitted by the deadline date and time.

In the event of contest cancellation, the organizers reserve the right to withhold judgment on existing contestant submissions.

The contest website may experience downtime during and after the contest.

The contest deadline may not be extended in the event of website downtime.

The contestant is responsible for submitting the entry on time.

Judges

The organizers of this event reserve the right to add, remove, or substitute judges at any time.

The judges in this event are prohibited from entering the contest.

The contest will be judged by the following individuals:

Judgement Criteria

All entries will be given a score of 1-10 by each judge on the following dimensions:

  • Utility
  • Creativity / Originality
  • User Experience / Design

Example:

7 5 8 20

The sum of scores from all judges will determine the final score for each contestant.

30 is the highest possible score.

The 3 entries with the highest final score will be declared winners.

In the event of a tie, prizes will be awarded in the order in which they were received.

Winners

By accepting prizes, winners agree to hold harmless all organizers and sponsors of the Silverlight Control Builder Contest against any and all claims and liability arising out of use of such prizes. Winner assumes all liability for any injury or damage caused, or claimed to be causes, from participation in this contest or use/acceptance of any prize.

Winners agree to have their name and work published on the contest website and in any other mediums.

Winners will be notified by email.

Winners that do not accept their prize will forfeit the prize. This includes failure to respond to notifications by email.

Prizes

The prizes listed on the prizes page are subject to change. The event organizers reserve the right to substitute prizes in the event of unforseen circumstances.

The event organizers reserve the right to add additional prizes during or after the contest.

Prizes cannot be replaced or substituted for money or any other item.

Prizes will be sent to the address provided during entry submission.

Undeliverable or returned prizes will be forfeited.

Prizes may be shipped separately through a third-party.

Event organizers and sponsors are not responsible for the damage or loss of prizes during or after shipment. Winners agree to accept all prizes AS IS.
